Purpose of the Lesson:
To teach vocabulary and parts of speech and poetic images
Project Summary:
Students write poem focusing on different parts of speech.

Introduction:
Ask the class:
What makes a poem? Are there different types of poems? Are there rules we have to follow when writing poems? How is the writing of poems different than our normal prose writing? Can you create poetic images using mostly nouns?
Process:
Day 1 – Nouns:
- Read an example of a noun poem to the students:
Quilts,
Books,
Toys,
I could spend all day in bed.
- Hand out worksheets and have students try to create their own noun poems.
- Have student share their poems with each other, but have them pause so that the class can guess what they are describing before they read the last line.
Day 2 – Verbs:
- Read an example of a verb poem to the students:
Running,
Jumping,
Screaming,
Chasing,
I have fun in the school yard.
- Hand out worksheets and have students try to create their own verb poems.
- Have student share their poems with each other, but have them pause so that the class can guess what they are describing before they read the last line.
Day 3 – Adjectives:
- Read an example of an adjective poem to the students:
Soapy,
Sloppy,
Hairy,
Smelly,
Gorilla in my bathtub.
- Hand out worksheets and have students try to create their own adjective poems.
- Have student share their poems with each other, but have them pause so that the class can guess what they are describing before they read the last line.
- Alternately they can write this type of poem which combines each adjective with a noun to create a verbal image:
Little boats
Big waves
Dark clouds
Strong winds
I don’t want to sail today.
Day 4 – Adverbs
- Read an example of an adverb poem to the students:
Quickly running,
Wildly screaming,
Gaily laughing,
Brightly beaming,
Today is my birthday.
- Hand out worksheets and have students try to create their own adverb poems.
- Have student share their poems with each other, but have them pause so that the class can guess what they are describing before they read the last line.
